Animal Fun: Scope and Sequence

This Scope and Sequence book maps out Animal Fun activities for 1 whole year, covering 8 weeks of the term for 4 terms to allow for some flexibility. Each activity is also linked to the EYLF, WA and Australian Curriculums.

Animal Fun was designed to be completely flexible in delivery – giving educators, allied health professionals and parents the freedom to choose activities that appealed not only to the interests of the children but also to address individual needs.

We understand that the demands to meet an extremely full curriculum can make finding time for outdoor activities challenging, but the evidence consistently shows that children are not spending sufficient time being physically active each day, and this is having a detrimental effect on not only their physical health but also on their mental health and well-being.

Over the years we have had feedback asking for more explicit instruction as to what would be the optimal way to implement the program and which activities should be tackled first.

We have listened to your requests and are happy to bring you this Scope and Sequence document.

Joshua Short B.Sci. (Exercise & Sport Science), Post Grad Dip. Education (Primary) and Sue McLaren, B. Soc. Sci. (Children and Family Studies) and Director of Animal Fun have drawn on their individual experience and expertise to sequence the activities in a developmentally appropriate way, to provide you with some creative ideas for implementation and linking each activity to the Early Years Learning Framework, the Western Australian and the Australian curriculums.

This Scope and Sequence covers a whole year of activities broken up into the 4 Terms of a standard Australian school year. Activities are practised for 2 weeks – the first week consisting of explicit instruction as per the Animal Fun Activity Card and in the second week we hope that you can begin to introduce a little bit of creativity and fun – whether that be introducing some music to the movement, or perhaps some dramatic play, or incorporating movement into other curriculum areas such as English, Mathematics, Science, or the Arts. We have provided you with suggested activities for 8 weeks of each term to allow for normal programming interruptions such as Swimming Lessons, Athletics Carnivals or School Camps. Of course, you are free to accelerate the program and complete the activities for just one week instead of two and over two terms instead of four if this timeframe suits you best.
